Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Ava DuVernay is returning to documentary filmmaking with 14th, a new film examining one of the most consequential and contested amendments in the U.S. Constitution.

Netflix announced that 14th will premiere globally on the streaming platform on Friday, December 4, following a limited theatrical release in select theaters in the United States and United Kingdom beginning November 27.

The documentary will make its world premiere on October 9 as the Closing Night selection of the 64th New York Film Festival. The appearance marks a return to the festival for DuVernay a decade after her acclaimed documentary 13th was featured as the festival’s Opening Night selection.

While 13th examined the relationship between race, mass incarceration and the constitutional amendment that abolished slavery except as punishment for a crime, 14th turns its attention to the 14th Amendment and the continuing debate over citizenship, equality and belonging in America.

Ratified after the Civil War, the 14th Amendment was intended to establish citizenship rights and equal protection under the law. DuVernay’s documentary traces more than 150 years of legal, political and cultural battles surrounding the amendment and examines how those disputes continue to shape contemporary American life.

According to the film’s description, 14th combines extensive archival research with current events to explore a central question: “Who gets to belong?”

DuVernay brings together more than 50 historians, attorneys, scholars, elected officials, cultural workers and commentators to examine the amendment from a range of ideological and professional perspectives.

Among those appearing in the documentary are U.S. Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Anna Paulina Luna, former U.S. Sen. Jeff Flake and current U.S. Sen. Alex Padilla.

Legal scholars and advocates featured in the film include Sherrilyn Ifill, Robert Chang and Stacey Abrams. Conservative author Donald T. Critchlow and cultural commentator Hasan Piker also participate, along with Pulitzer Prize-winning historians Eric Foner and David Blight.

The documentary continues DuVernay’s long-running exploration of race, history, justice and American institutions.

Her previous work includes Selma, the Academy Award-nominated documentary 13th, Middle of Nowhere, A Wrinkle in Time and Origin. Her television projects include the Emmy-winning limited series When They See Us and the acclaimed drama Queen Sugar.

DuVernay has received Emmy, BAFTA, Sundance, Image and Peabody awards for her work. She is also the founder of ARRAY, a narrative change collective focused on storytelling and expanding opportunities within the film and television industries.

Her honors include honorary doctorates from Yale University and Morehouse College and the Great Americans Medal from the Smithsonian Institution. She previously served multiple terms on the boards of the Sundance Institute and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and currently serves her third term on the American Film Institute Advisory Board.

14th comes from ARRAY Filmworks and is directed by DuVernay. The documentary is produced by DuVernay, Spencer Averick, Tammy Garnes and Paul Garnes.

14th begins its limited theatrical release November 27 and premieres globally on Netflix December 4.
